Top Ten Of The Week: 2/4/13

Top Ten Reasons Why It's a Good Idea To Keep a Journal

10.  When you're upset, sometimes, it's better to express yourself in writing, instead of verballizing how you feel impusively. Try to run through the situatin on paper, maybe it's not as bad as you think. Your journal gives you the perfect oppurtuity to express yourself, and take some time to annalyze how you feel, before you bring up an issue that is easily resolved, or not a huge deal.

9. You  can use your journal to express your feelings in their purest sense.  Any feelings are OK to write about.  For those who like to draw or write music, these journal entries can be revisited later on for creative inspiration.  Many well-known creative artists have used their feelings to express themselves in another creative outlet.  Give it a try.

8.  Your journal can become your autobiography.  As you get older the details of your life may become a bit fuzzier and difficult to remember.  Having a journal where you describe your activities, relationships, emotions, education and everything else, can be the basis for writing your life story later on.  Imagine having the story of your life to hand down your own children.  They will be so grateful to learn about their parent in a deep and meaningful way.  You will fell very grateful that you took the time to write in your journal.

7.  The word "catharsis" means to work out your feelings through an activity or some other process.  Journaling helps you to work through any emotions, problems, or concerns you may have.  You will feel better after your put your feelings on paper or on the computer because those thought will not have to clutter your mind.  The writing process is a catharsis because it allows you to express the issues on your mind through your journaling and thereby work through them.

6.  A journal can be used as your source of hopes, dreams, inspiration, and goals.  It is very helpful to write down everything that inspires you because it helps you to visualize these positive expressions and to return to that writing to relive and reinspire over and over again.  Many writers talk about their visualization board.  This is a board where you tape or paste pictures cut from magazines that express what your want out of life.  When you look at that Board you are spiritually and purposely giving life to those images and sending thought out to the universe that can help you to internalize those positive ideals and focus on making them come true.  Your journal can be that strong an inspiration in your life.

5.  Journal writing can help heal a bad day.  Many professionals in the field of psychology have written that people who journal are able to come out of a bad day "funk" faster than those who do not journal.  The reason is fairly simple.  Journaling give you an outlet for expressing your feelings and helps to not keep the botled up inside, where they tend to fester.

4.  Keeping a journal helps you to build trust.  Most of us are afraid that their journal will be read by others and we feel too embarassed to write down our feelings.  By letting go of that fear and keeping the journal, you can help to build trust in others.  Even if you hide your journal or keep it in a secure computer file, just the fact that you are trusting yourself to write and to express yourself is an act of building trust.

3.  Don't let other people ever tell you that your thoughts or feelings are not important or real.  Many teens do not want to journal because they have been given the message that their feelings are not worthwhile or not worth expressing.

2.  You could also improve your writing, and handwriting by practicing in a journal. My handwriting is not the  best, so I need all the practice I can get!

1.  Especially the teen years, you will experience lots of different emotions, sometimes for no reason. Make sure you let these feelings out, if you keep them inside, you might get so much piled up you would explode! ( Figurtively of course. )

Of course, a journal is no substitute for talking with a parent, or a trusted adult. Never be afraid to tell your parents something. They love you, and only want what is best for you. It may be cheesy, but in most cases, it is 100% true. Talking your feelings out with a parent is also a great way to relate, and connect with them. Maybe they went through something similer in school.
